Really Important Note

This module has been somewhat popular and the services that offer FREE thumbnail screenshots are getting stricter with their terms of use. You should only enable thumbnail refreshes at the time of install.

Also note, this module will NOT generate thumbnails if you select "Public" as the authorized service group. I know it's the default option but you need to select an user group with higher privileges like "Super User".

  1. Install this module ZIP using your Joomla! CMS extension manager.
  2. Go to "Content" > "Media Manager" > Create a folder for your thumbnails.
  3. Go to "Extensions" > "Module Manager" > Click on module to publish/customize it.
    1. Specify the images folder as the one you created in step 2.
    2. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
    3. Specify a group which can generate thumbnails and use the service.
  4. Login to front-end as a user belonging to the group specified in 3c.
  5. Keep refreshing the page until all thumbnails have been generated.
    1. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
    2. Logout

  6. NB: Thumbnails will first appear blue as the service downloads/queues them.

Adding a weblink:

  1. Add your Joomla! weblink as per usual
  2. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
  3. Login to the front-end of your website as an authorized service group user (as specified in the module parameter)
  4. View a page that displays this module.
  5. Keep refreshing the module until the correct thumbnail is generated.
  6. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
  7. Logout

Refreshing displayed thumbnails:

  1. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
  2. Login to your Joomla! website front-end as an authorized service group user (as specified in the module parameter).
  3. View a page that displays this module.
  4. Keep refreshing the module until the correct thumbnail is generated.
  5. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
  6. Logout

For frequent additions (What I do on my own site):

  1. Create/refresh a copy of your Joomla website.
  2. Add the weblink on your COPY site.
  3. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO on the COPY site.
  4. Keep refreshing the module until all thumbnails are generated.
  5. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
  6. Copy the image just generated to your ORIGINAL site (live/production)
  7. Add the weblink on your ORIGINAL site. (you wont need the service as the image already exists...)

Don't have a COPY of your Joomla site? (submitted by Webmaster de EDiSoPortal)

  1. Create a category for your weblinks (eg. "Helpful Links")
  2. Set the "quicklist weblinks" module to view this category. This will be the one everyone sees.
  3. Create a copy of the "quicklist weblinks" module
  4. Set the permissions to view this new module as "Super Users" or "Special".
  5. Set the category of weblinks to "Root" or "Uncategorized".
  6. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO on the restricted module.
  7. Keep refreshing the module until all thumbnails are generated.
  8. Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
  9. Now modify the weblink's category to what you specified in step 1 (eg. "Helpful Links")

No Thumbnail Yet?
If the thumbnail hasn't been generated and you have opted to display thumbnails, then a placeholder indicating a missing image will display. You can create a "no_thumbnail_yet" image (if you have selected thumbnails to be PNG then this has to be a "no_thumbnail_yet.png" file, if you have selected BMP then this has to be a "no_thumbnail_yet.bmp" file). Save it to the images folder which keeps all your other thumbnails for this module.

No Semi-Transparency Effect?
Not obvious but to switch this off, the parameter "Semi-Transparent Effect" has to equal 1. If you put a fraction of 1, eg. 0.5, this will result in the thumbnail having 50% opacity to start with when the page loads; when you hover the mouse cursor over it the thumbnail will regain 100% opacity.

Target Window: Rokbox?
Demo'd on my personal website because I am using a RocketTheme template but this should work if you have RocketTheme's RokBox Extension installed. It simply opens an external link in a "lightbox" which is a pretty cool effect, see the front page of and click on one of my "recent weblinks" for a demo.

Semi-Transparency and Rounded Corners not Working?
The "Rounded Corners" effect on the thumbnails and popups are CSS3 driven. These will only really display properly in browsers that support CSS3 (Chrome, Firefox 3.5+, Safari 4+, MS Internet Explorer 9+). Other users should just see a straight angle corner. Semi-Transparency uses a CSS3 Opacity feature (works in pre-mentioned browsers as well as Opera 10+).

Administrators or Super Users to generate thumbnails?
The authorized group to generate new thumbnails USED TO BE Administrators or Super Admins/Users. Due to several requests, the module has been modified to accommodate any Joomla! group (specified in the parameters). It is NOT RECOMMENDED to set this to normal users as this will use up your entitlement to FREE prints extremely quickly. The "STOP Thumbnail Service" parameter was created to be economical to both your server and the free service. Use this wisely and you could get away with generating a million images for FREE!

Error on first install?
If you get something like the following error after upgrading/installing this module:
Warning: in_array() []: Wrong datatype for second argument in /public_html/modules/mod_quicklistweblinks/helper.php on line 214
This is because you have not selected a thumbnail "service group" authorized to generate new thumbnails in the module parameters. Set these and it should go away.

This module is set to upgrade on install or something like that. I have not got the upgrade server for J16 working yet but soon. Also there's no need to delete a previous version of this module, just download the updated one, and install as per usual.

  1. All images in the folder for the weblinks have to be of the same file type (eg. BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, or TIF). The program I had made to take the screenshots made them all the same type which is probably why I made the module think all thumbnails were equal. The module specifies the size of the image.

  2. The module keeps generating website thumbnail preview images on TWO conditions: 1) you are logged in to the front-end of the Joomla! website as an authorized "service group" user (as specified in the module parameter) 2) the parameter "STOP Thumbnail Generation" is set to "NO". (Important! remember to switch this to YES when you have updated all your thumbnails as each thumbnail is one entitlement of the first 100,000 for free. After that there may be a charge or images may come back watermarked/unavailable).

  3. The module only generates website thumbnail preview images for the weblinks that are currently displaying in the module. If your Joomla! website is still in development or you can afford to go a bit crazy, let the module display all your weblinks and then login to front-end as an administrator to generate ALL the thumbnails. Then customize and reduce the number of listed weblinks to what you want. Or set up a module which only the authorized "service group" has access to (Special?).

Free Website Thumbnail Services
Thumbnail Services will give you a limited number of free thumbnail generations. About 100,000 on average which is more than enough for our Joomla! website (unless you're reinventing the wheel by making a Joomla! Google Directory). Let's say I have about 340 weblinks, refreshing the page over 30 minutes while the thumbnails queue and get refreshed, this caused about 1,000 thumbnail generation requests. Which you'll agree is economical for both the service and your own server.

Services to use:

  • (unknown number of FREE prints - Tested: Add [])
  • (unknown number of FREE prints - OpenSource)
  • (limited to 250,000 FREE prints)
  • (limited to 100,000 and requires Signup - NO GO)
  • (limited to 200,000 FREE prints and requires Signup - NO GO)
  • (free image prints with linkback - not Chrome compatible)
  • (Signup required - NO GO)
  • (Not FREE but website allows 1 thumbnail free - :c)
  • (unknown number of FREE prints - Tested: Add [])
  • (says "FREE" - Tested: Add [])

So what to do with all of these? Well sometimes a service can be busy, maybe you're near your limit for FREE thumbnails. No problem! This module only makes a request when you enable it to refresh all thumbnails (and login as admin). If you have a million links then hopefully, you can switch to each service as it becomes available and do them all for FREE!

I saw a link to revolver maps when cluster maps stopped working .I was able to get the revolver map to work. But there is one problem. When I go to cluster maps and then use the back button to return to ccar.wikispaces .com, the video on the page jumps to the right bar menu replacing the spinning globe. Also when I look at the details, the globe often disappears. Is there something wrong in the set up or is this a problem with wikispaces?

I changed the sourcecode in the helper.php file at line 249

$ch = curl_init($jqw_thumbservice.rawurlencode($rows[$i]['url']));

$ch = curl_init($jqw_thumbservice.rawurldecode($rows[$i]['url']));

It works now!

I installed Joes Quicklist Weblinks version 3.1.1 for my Joomla 3x. I use with customer/API key. I can create thumbmails in my images/quicklis tweblinks folder (10.jpg, 11.jpg...15.jpg ). The problems are, first, the size of such thumbnails 291 kb until 383 kb and the dimension of each file is 1280x1024. Second, in my weblink page(front-end) , I don't have correct thumbnails in each website link. The thumbnails just a rounded square, each with color of grey, blue, yellow. etc. Hope you could help.

I'm using v2.4 (for J2.5): how and where do I set the image (sub)folder?
JQW gives me 3 options ("Specify image folder"): [none seleced|use default|waterma rks] (In the documentation, the image folder is free selectable?!)

I created "watermarks" as subfolder of /images/ and /images/userpix / (my media-manager-r oot), but thumbnail creation does not work yet.

Can't download new version. I get the same error message as Kat a few post's up....
CTRL+F5 does not make any change.

Hmm... thanks Webcrawler!

I can't replicate the error as all the links work for both my superuser, test and guest accounts. Can I ask what browser you are using and that may help me find out why some people cannot download this extension?

Also do you get the download buttons for the specific versions displayed or is it just a blank part when you click on the main download button (the one under the description of the app)?

Is there an alternative url for updates, as this one does not work:

Great module by the way
0 Joel L Saturday, 25th October 2014, 8:49 am
Hi Knut,

Please download the latest version of my module (3.x has not had any problems on a Joomla 2.5.x site). The updates link you have I think is an old one. Thanks!
0 JMG Tuesday, 7th October 2014, 4:03 pm
I've set "Display Images" under Module Settings but the modules continues to display a hard coded CSS that cause a problem because it has padding.

Now I can create an override and remove this div (near line 41 for the "draw the inline image cell - uses div for rounded corners with borders").

But I think it would be more inline with "Display Images" = No to not display this dive.

Joomla 2.5 (latest version) with version 3.1.1 of Quicklist Weblinks.

Everything displays OK but I cannot get the link description to update in the front end when the text is modified in Weblinks/links. I have re-saved the module, cleared cache etc but no luck.

Any comments appreciated.

Hi Traveller,

Apologies for the incredible delay as I have been focusing on another app in development. I will have another look at the text description feature for this module but I have it working on both demo sites (Joomla 2.5.x and Joomla 3.3.x). In the meantime, backup your images and try switching the thumbnail service on again temporarily to see if this changes the description.

I am having a problem with the thumbs. I think i have everything set up properly, the STOP Thumbnail Service is set to No,
The Thumbnail Generation Group is set to Admin
and i am log in as admin on the front end, but the images do not download.
On Free Website Thumbnail Services above you say "add this address" where should i add that? this might be the problem.

I am using Joomla 3.2

Thanks a lot,
0 Joel L Monday, 14th July 2014, 12:49 pm
Hi Skarosg,

Not sure if we took this to e-mail but I noticed your site is displaying the images now. The "add this address" is usually only if you want to use a thumbnail service provider that I have not heard of and that you would rather use. If you have your images already then there is no point in changing this.

Hi there... i used this extension and it worked good for me but, it's possible to display the results in a two or three column way or in a table?
If yes, how? I need to display all the results (about 150) in one page, and in one column will be too long...
Let me know

Hi mamarz,

I haven't put anything in the module to do this yet but other downloaders have shown me pages where they have used the module several times, notably with each module displaying a different category. This is the only workaround I have but I may make the module display columns to take up a page later (or convert it to a component).

Hope that helps!

Kind Regards,

0 Max Saturday, 16th August 2014, 10:20 am
Many thanks for this reply, sorry my answer is so late. I did like u suggested, and obtain many columns by adding more modules in a table in an article. This solve the situation for me now.

But, another question: the module ask for how much link and previews to display. If i choose too few, it doesn't display the results, if too much, i can see blank link. So, it's possible for you modify the module in a way that if the result to display are less it will not show blank results?
Many thanks, all answers are so appreciated!
0 Migs Friday, 21st February 2014, 6:22 pm
If I don't want to use a thumbnail service, is this possible?

If I add an image to a weblink manually, setting the right folder in the module, should it load the thumbnail?

I ask because it doesn't seem to.

The image gets renamed on upload to 1.png and .png is the filetype set in the module settings.
0 Joel L Saturday, 22nd February 2014, 10:17 am
Hi Migs,

You need to set the module parameters for the image type and the folder but, yes, if you upload 1.png then this will be linked to the weblink which has as identifier "1".

If you want to use a different image type, then specify it in the module parameters for what file type it should be looking for.

Make sure the thumbnail service stop is set to "Yes" so it doesn't overwrite the images you upload.

Hope that helps!
0 Migs Saturday, 22nd February 2014, 12:00 pm
Ah, it was me who was being dumb. The weblink I uploaded the icon for was ID 8, not 1.

I renamed the file and it worked. Doh!

Cheers Joel

Is there any option of adding a noffolow attribute to the links dsplyed in the module?

Hi Thomas,

Good point. I've already been told off by Google for some other modules that were doing this. I will apply it to the next version.

In the meantime, you can edit the "default.php" lines ~43 and ~55 where the ...class="jqw_t humbnail"... and add it after:
a class="jqw_thumbnail" rel="nofollow"

I have installed Quicklist Weblinks on a new Joomla 2.5.18 site. I want the module to display images from afolder on my server and have set this up with.jpg images as required. However, I cannot make the images display - I just jet empty boxes. The page can be seen at

Any comments appreciated.
0 Joel L Thursday, 13th February 2014, 2:07 pm

The module will use the "no_images_yet" image if the weblink image does not exist. The naming convention for a weblink image is the weblink ID and then the extension format (eg. 1.jpg - where 1 is the weblink ID and jpg is the extension you specify in the module params).

You can either create your own screenshot and upload it to the "images/quickli stweblinks" folder (or folder you specify in the module) named 1.jpg, 2.jpg (as long as weblink ID=1 and weblink ID=2 exist). If you use the Joomla Admin Panel to view the list of all your Joomla weblinks, the ID column is the number to use.

The auto-generation of thumbnails uses third-party providers which you can select in the module parameters. They are not quick and will often queue you (as a lot of people may want to use their services at the same time). The first time you use them, they will display a "Thumbshot Coming Soon" or something similar. wIMG often display an image which says what number in the queue you are.

Once the image has been auto-generated, disable the thumbnail generator (STOP=yes) otherwise it will keep overwriting your existing images. Use the method by the Webmaster of EdiSoPortal outlined in the documentation as a good method for adding new weblinks and their respective screenshot.

It is important to note that there are usually about 100'000 free previews and thereafter, the images may come back watermarked or not available.

Hope that helps!

0 Hervé Friday, 31st January 2014, 2:50 pm

Thank you for the quick response

The Joomla weblinks have a title, a description and 2 images. The idea is to put the thumbnail in the first picture. The links directory Joomla benefit thumbnails generated automatically :-)

My links will have a long description.
In the module I want by clicking on the image to be redirected to the page j! Weblink (to read the long description).

0 Hervé Thursday, 30th January 2014, 4:54 pm

I followed the instructions but after 1 hour, it does not work.
Is this because I tested in locahost?
Average length of time for these services?

I understand how activation / deactivation to keep these funds, but I do not understand why it is not possible to cache the application 1 time. This would start the generation of the miniature in our links directory whenever a user registers its site. Need to activate / deactivate. It may be technically difficult and i understand (maybe a pro version?).

Other suggestions (sorry):
Give the possibility of an order in the service in case a service more or evil work (maybe a pro version?).

Store the image in the first image of the Joomla link and / or see this image when hovering dna list of links Joomla

Sorry for my bad english
Joomla 3.2
0 Joel L Friday, 31st January 2014, 2:02 pm
Salut Herve!

The average time is that an image should be almost immediate. The first image will be an acknowledgement image which depending on the service will display a watermarked image, or an image with a message (eg. "coming soon" or "you are 1 of 256 in queue")

The image will store the images, it only overwrites the images for the weblinks you specify when you switch the "STOP thumbnail service" to "no". See the documentation for a suggestion by the Webmaster de EDiSoPortal on how to only generate images for new weblinks.

A pro version is in development which includes thumbnail services which require registration (we're currently using free ones) but it is difficult to design specific APIs and then keep these up to date.

I'm afraid I didn't understand your last point about storing the first image.

Ton anglais est mieux que mon Francais alors ne soit pas decus :)

0 Hervé Thursday, 13th February 2014, 10:27 am
No answer?
Otherwise I'm looking for alternative to run a cron every day to generate the thumbnails.
url, php script,...?
0 Joel L Thursday, 13th February 2014, 2:14 pm
Hi Herve,

You could do a cronjob for a PHP script to do this. It would need to be a standalone that can access your Joomla database (search my site for "standalone").

To copy the images, your server will need to support cURL. (well this module uses cURL, you can use anything which copies images from a website to your own server).

The problem the module has is that it can't tell if a new image is new... Everytime it looks to copy an image over from a website, this resets the timestamp so a copied image is always the newest. It does not know how to determine if you want to keep that image (a new image may be watermarked or displaying "thumbshot coming soon").

Hope that helps!
0 istofir Wednesday, 29th January 2014, 12:06 pm
Hello I have installed and configured the module on joomla 2.5 but the thumbnails of the images are not seen. I have set:

STOP Thumbnail Service at no
jpg file type and folder used ... but nothing.

what happens? why do not you see? how to associate the images in the folder with the web link?

0 Joel L Wednesday, 29th January 2014, 1:37 pm
Hi istofir,

You specify the folder which stores the images in the module parameters (eg. quicklistweblin ks). The images are 1.jpg, 3.jpg, 4.jpg, ... where the number is the ID of the weblink and jpg is the file format (eg. PNG, JPG, BMP).

Also check that the authorized group is an administrator or super user. The other joomla groups as of version 2.5.x no longer generate files on the fly, so specifying "public" and "registered" do not work anymore.

Hope that helps! If you run into further problems, feel free to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Some of my weblinks have links in the text description. When I display my weblinks using QuickList, the tags are stripped out. Is there a way to prevent this?
0 Joel L Friday, 20th December 2013, 6:58 pm
Hi Anthony,

I put in a function to remove HTML tags but then again, this is only needed if your site allows registered users to add joomla weblinks. If the administrators are the only ones to add weblink descriptions that don't contain malicious code, then modify the helper.php file from my downloaded module:

Line 213 (depending on version):

Save, compress the folder as a zip and re-install.

And that should do it. If you're modifying it already installed, the one you want is /modules/mod_quicklistweblinks/helper.php.

Hope that helps!
0 Anthony P Friday, 20th December 2013, 7:10 pm
That did it. Thank you for the quick response. And, no, we don't allow registered user to add links to our site. Though, I am glad to know you thought about that.

Hi Mick,

Not sure on this one. I will need more info such as:

- Which version of Joomla are you using?
- Which version of my module are you using?
- Which version of PHP are you using?

Note that there seems to be an issue with installing version 3.0 of my module on a Joomla 2.5 website. Please use the previous version to this.

Hi Gianni,

I haven't given that option but you could override the CSS tag (display:none) or modify the helper.php file to not display it. I will make a note to include this feature in the next release.

My Joomla verion is 2.5.14

I accidentally update php to version 5.4 and I'm receiving a warning:
Warning: Creating default object from empty value in ... /modules/mod_qu icklistweblinks /helper.php on line 234

I know it's a non declared object but I've not been able to fix it.
Any advice?
0 Joel L Friday, 23rd August 2013, 12:37 pm
Hi Rafael,

Tough one. The class is declared right at the start of the file under Code:$jqw = new stdClass();

I used to have the weblinkentries carried across as an array but then a downloader suggested that this way was better. I might revert to arrays as I find them more compatible with various systems.

I don't have an overwhelming number of suggestions on how to fix this, I could use arrays in my next version but as I've learnt jQuery, my next version was probably going to be a rewrite anyhow.

Kind Regards,

Joomla 2.5.16
PHP 5.4
Quicklist 2.3

Hi Guys

I had the same problem after my hoster did an upgrade from PHP 5.3 to PH 5.4.

I made a quick and dirty fix:

before the for-loop on line 206
$jqw->weblinkentries = new stdClass();

then before the weblinkentries on line 234
$jqw->weblinkentries->$i = new stdClass();

works for me.

Regards Simon
0 Joel L Saturday, 14th December 2013, 10:40 am
Ha! Brilliant Simon!

I just realized this is a change I applied on later versions (3.0.1+) of this module because of the Joomla v3 PHP requirements.

The latest versions revert to using the classic array but your fix does do the job. I will try to release a version for Joomla 2.5 and PHP 5.4 later on today after a bit more testing.

Hi Joel,

thanks for the quick reply. I will try the manual image list, since I intended from the beginning to use logos instead of screenshot. Might be nice for further releases to have the choice between own/autmaticall y generated pics.

Cocerning your zillion questions: the module showed up, every content was at its place (except of course the images, they showed "noimageyet2) - as long as I didn't login. First after login everything vanished. Strange behaviour, which I never experienced before. But don't worry - now I don't need to autogenerate pics anylonger.

Kind regards,
0 Herbert Wednesday, 26th June 2013, 10:09 am
Hi Joe,

I want to use your module via laodposition in content. All links show fine with the empty pics. When I wanted to generate the pics, following your instructions, after the login as "super user" the page went completely white and nothing more is to be seen. What did I wrong?

And is there a possibility to edit the pics manually, by loading them into that expressive directory. How have they to be named?
0 Joel L Thursday, 27th June 2013, 9:36 am
Hi Herbert,

Funny you're the first to ask! Is the plugin "Content - Load Modules" enabled? If so, what is the style setting? And are you sure the position name you are using doesn't already exist? And are you using loadposition <positionnam e> or loadmodule <modulename& gt;? Sorry for the zillions of questions but that's how I find out what's wrong.

You can edit the pics manually. They carry the name format as "weblinkID.ext" where weblinkID is the ID number (eg. 1, 2, 3, ...) of the weblink and the ext is the file type extension that you specify in the MODULE PARAMETER "image type".

So, Create your image, call it for example 1.png (for a weblink identified with ID=1 and of file type PNG and specified the image type as PNG in the module parameter); then upload them into the folder that stores your thumbnails ("quicklistwebl inks"?). Note that switching on the Thumbnail Service will overwrite them ALL so have a backup/copy.

Hope that answers your question!
0 palmoni Tuesday, 20th August 2013, 6:04 am
Should the manually generated thumbnails be of a specific size?
0 Joel L Friday, 23rd August 2013, 1:20 pm
Hi Palmoni,

You can set them to any size (preferably all images the same) but note that when you specify size in the module, this will crop (acts like a window to the image) what you can see of the image.

0 palmoni Tuesday, 20th August 2013, 6:01 am
I renamed my thumbnails in the directory specified for it, as weblink1.jpg, weblink2.jpg, etc. but they still don't show up in the module. I set the thumbnail services to stop. Don't know what's going on.

Hi Joe --
thanks for the quick reply and new version.
I tried on (clean) Joomla 3 and with PHP 5.3.
I get the following 2 errors:
C:\C\_WEB\SITES \j3\modules\mod _quicklistwebli nks\helper.php on line 215
$this_link_acces s=trim($rows[$i]['access']); // v2.3 Eric G.

Notice: Undefined variable: this_link_acces s in C:\C\_WEB\SITES \j3\modules\mod _quicklistwebli nks\helper.php on line 240
$jqw->weblinkentries->$i->linkaccess=$this_link_acces s; // v2.3 Eric G.

I guess it may be because the stricter validations of php 5.3. When I remove these 2 lines all runs allright!

NOW another question:
- I do not have thumbnails configured so I do not get to see any images next to the weblinks. Really I would JUST want to use the IMAGE I associated with the weblink as defined in Joomla 3 (it is a small one) - Is this possible, or asking too much?

0 Joel L Thursday, 27th June 2013, 9:24 am
Hi Evelthon,

Yes we have decided to release a separate version of this module intended for Joomla 3.0x or later and keep the current version (for Joomla v2.5.x) compatible with Joomla 2.5.x websites. The version for 3.0.x is expected to be available next week. Your question to use use the IMAGE_I for the weblink should be fine to include as we have been looking at it too. We're just deciding on how this will be managed.

The errors you describe works in 2.5 but I think the part which says 'access' should be 'w.access' but I'll double-check and release an update. I'm away on holiday but the module for version 2.5 should be available by the end of this week.

Thank you for your feedback!
0 Evelthon Thursday, 20th June 2013, 3:21 pm
Any pre-release for Joomla 3 would be appreciated...
Just installed it and came to error (like a previous post):
SELECT, w.title, w.url, w.description, w.created, w.modified, w.hits FROM jos_weblinks w
WHERE w.state=1 AND w.approved=1 ORDER BY w.created ASC LIMIT 0, 2

--> Running the same SQL against the db seems that column w.approved is no longer part of Joom3!
#1054 - Unknown column 'w.approved' in 'where clause'

0 Joel L Friday, 21st June 2013, 1:06 pm
Hi Evelthon,

Yes you're quite right the field "approved" has gone. I'm not even sure it is used properly by the legacy systems as I've been testing the same query with and without this on various sites with no differences.

I've released version 2.3 of this module and included a fix for the error in the release. This means a weblink is displayed if it is published but whether it is approved is ignored.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Joel,

Great module, it really fills a need, and I'm not even using the thumbnails.

It doesn't seem to recognize the access level of the link, whether Public, Registered or Special (unless I am missing something). I would like to create an override that addresses this, but I'm not sure what variable to check...

If this is a little too deep for an override, I can create a "registered" category/module , but it would be nice for my situation if the links with restricted access within the category could be parsed as such.

Thanks for any guidance!
0 Joel L Thursday, 20th June 2013, 12:17 pm
Hi egrutz,

I've done this for other modules but you're right, I'll make a note to include it in a future release.

If you want a head start, you can download my "joes word cloud" module which uses "access levels". I'll post here when I have an update.

Kind Regards,

After publishing the module, I have broken layout of the whole page.
There is some error after the 1st weblink.
+1 Joel L Friday, 31st May 2013, 3:14 pm
Hi Tomas,

Visiting the link you have provided I am having difficulty understanding what has happened. There appears to be quite a significant hard-code change "class=thickbox " and then it seems the link is inserted as the name to the image link.

Could you enable the "Debug Mode" of the JQW module (not the Joomla CMS) and send me it's message? If it has sensitive data then hopefully it will help you and you can resolve it. If not just send me something and I'll have a look.
+1 Hans v Thursday, 30th May 2013, 10:02 pm
could you add the option of displaying the links in more than one column?
0 Joel L Friday, 31st May 2013, 3:10 pm
Hi Hans,

Thank you for the message. That does sound like an interesting idea however the direction that this module is going is to use the jQuery framework to produce animated slides with the option of a grid layout. Isn't quite what you're asking for but when it comes out I hope it can be adapted to suit your needs better. Expected early July 2013.

Also, is there a newer version for Joomla 3?

0 Joel L Tuesday, 14th May 2013, 12:37 pm
Oh and we're still playing with Joomla 3. We don't find it stable enough and need more details on Joomla 3.5 development.

I don't have a version for Joomla 3 as yet... but I've still installed it with some success.

Or, will be adventurous and run it on Joomla 3... :-)

Oh, and thanks for the quick replies!
0 Joel L Tuesday, 14th May 2013, 12:35 pm
Hi Christophe,

Can I ask what browser you are using?

Also there is a timeout on the download page, if you are on that page for a while, the download link will become invalid. Just refresh the page in your browser and try downloading again.

The reason for the timeout is to stop automated scripts or programs people have been using to download my stuff. Direct links are also prevented.

Hope that answers your question!

0 Joel L Wednesday, 8th May 2013, 10:22 am
Hi Billy,

This module only feeds off a Joomla website and specifically the Joomla Weblinks component that comes with the default Joomla installation.

Login to your Joomla Admin Panel > Components > Weblinks > New

Hope that helps!

Hi Mr Lipman,

Thanks for such a fantastic module!

Strangely of late doesn't seem to generate any images, only the placeholder, when selected - do you experience this issue also?

As to the other 2 options currently available, freewebsitethum has disappeared, and and though works, the thumbnails it creates are quite poor because they are thumbnails of only the top right part of a website...
+1 Joel L Saturday, 4th May 2013, 7:42 pm
Hi Manuel,

Yes unfortunately the completely FREE services are quite poor ( I don't tend to use, and wIMG is not great quality). I have added ones which are still FREE but need registration and which produce better quality images.

Quoting Joel Lipman:

This is probably a really dumb question, but where have you added it and how do I set up the registration? The module doesn't seem to be updated...
0 Joel L Tuesday, 7th May 2013, 12:23 pm
Hi Manuel,

No question is not worth asking :)

The ones that require registration are not registration from my site but registration with the service.

For example:
If you select as the provider, then you need to go signup to website and they will give you a customer key/reference. This is the one you put in the module.

We are still testing the new feature of using registered services but we need to determine if it is worthwhile creating our own Thumbnail service provider that we could limit to the usage of this module.

Note to anybody hosted on a Windows environment: You can setup a thumbnail service for FREE. Linux is more complicated.

Hi Joel,
thanks for your great weblinks module. One stupid question:
Do i have a chance of using it with version 3.0 or even 3.1?
0 Joel L Wednesday, 10th April 2013, 5:36 pm
Hi Torsten,

I haven't developed a version for 3.0 in a while but it seems to me to still be a little unstable.

It should only need a few changes. I recall there were some issues with legacy parameters but it installed.

Quite a difference to 2.5.x but no I wouldn't recommend it. I'll note it for the next version.

Thanks for the interest and if you want to try it out and let me know of any errors, it'd be much appreciated :-)

Dear Joel
Thanks so much for your great job and also thanks for this much responsibility for answering all the requests and questions.
I wanted to know is there any way to show the weblinks in more than one columns?
My second question is that I have used your advice to Yahhr about changing the links properties in template.css but didn't get any result.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 3rd April 2013, 10:47 am
Hi Sarah,

1) Not at the moment, but some downloaders have shown me where they have simply added the same module several times to the same page to achieve this. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it as it was never designed to replace a component.

2) You'll need to add it to your active CSS template. If you have a page up that I can access, I can use google chrome (right-click on item and select "inspect element") this tells you what stylesheet is doing what to the image. Alternatively, hard-code the /tmpl/default.p hp file.

Hope that answers your questions :)

Thanks again for the interest!

My thumbnails are being generated - but they are only ever the "thumbnail coming soon" image. If I delete them they are just added again as that image. (using . gived 7 out of 37 images on my links page

Free website gives blank images

Any ideas?
0 Joel L Wednesday, 27th March 2013, 1:26 pm
Hi Thomas,

Yes I was rewriting this but it has become increasingly difficult to find free thumbnail service providers. I could integrate ones that you pay for but I feel that defies why this extension was free.

If you get screenshots generated that aren't messages saying "thumbnail coming soon" (and don't use so much as I think everyone does and their queue gets full quickly), then save the images to your local computer so that the service doesn't overwrite the ones you're happy with.

When you switch the service off then you can manage the images, etc.

For the 7 out of 37 images, is the module setup to select the first 7 weblinks or have you tried specifying 37 instead of 7?
0 Mar Sunday, 24th March 2013, 10:38 am
Hi, I've installed Quicklist Weblink, but the thumbnails have not been generated yet. I set the debug mode to "yes", the message displays is " SQL Query:

Processed 0 of 2 thumbnails: "
I'm not sure that this information is about am error but the fact is the thumbnails are missing!! Could you help me??
It's a joomla 2.5, and I am using a Rockettheme template in case it would mean something to you.

Many thanks
0 Joel L Tuesday, 26th March 2013, 1:50 pm
Hi Mar,

A good way to check if the thumbnails are being generated is to look in your Joomla images folder for this module (default is "/images/quickl istweblinks") and see if it has started creating 1.png, 2.png (if you have PNG selected, 1.jpg, 2.jpg if you have JPG). The number as filename is the ID of the weblink in Joomla.

If there are files there, then the module is somewhat working. The module has to download an image from a Thumbnail Service who will queue you (as lots of people use the same service) so their images may be blank or watermarked to begin with. Once you are not queued and the service generates real screenshots, copy these and store them offline as backup. The module will keep rewriting the images as long as the module parameter is not set to "STOP thumbnail service".

I hope that helps. Feel free to get back to me using this comment system.

BTW, this site ( ) also uses Joomla 2.5.x and a RocketTheme template, the module can make use of RT's RokBox (change "Links open in").

0 Joel L Wednesday, 20th March 2013, 2:50 pm
Hi artonweb,

Does the table prefix for your Joomla 3.0 website use "jos_" (ie. does "jos_weblinks" table exist)? Check you also use the latest version of my module as that code looks like the old Joomla 1.5 one (still available to download for support reasons).

0 Thomas P Wednesday, 13th March 2013, 9:37 pm

was showing thumbnails except a couple - I refreshed and they all show "comign soon" now. Any ideas why? Service group is set to registered.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 13th March 2013, 10:04 pm
Ok, just visited your site, try switching the service to either wimg or the other free one.

I think it's time I increased that list of tumbnail generation services.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 13th March 2013, 9:53 pm
Hi there Thomas!

Yes, it should take a few minutes if a lot of other sites are requesting a refreshed screenshot. Sometimes they will add text to the holding image so that you can see where you are in the queue. "Coming soon" sounds like a waiting queue.

Remember to STOP the service after you've refreshed all your screenshots otherwise it'll just keep overwriting the image on each load.

Also try service group as "Super User". Registered users will use up your free quota (200k/mo?) and the service may start adding watermarks.

Hope that helps

How can I translate 'more links' at the end of the listing.
Thank you
+1 Joel L Sunday, 10th March 2013, 5:00 pm
Hi Alain,

In version 2.1.1 this is in the helper.php file towards the end of the file. Replace the words "More Links" with whatever you want.

As it's something I've always meant to change (so no text is hardcoded), I've added this to version 2.1.2 in the language file.

0 Thomas P Wednesday, 13th February 2013, 8:43 pm
How do you get this to show the direct URL rather than teh redirect. I have tried this edit but it doesn't seem to have the desired effect when using this extension .
0 Joel L Thursday, 14th February 2013, 11:27 am
Hi Thomas,

The redirect instead of the direct URL was so that Joomla kept counting the hits of people going through your site to your weblink. If you remove this, then the hits counter for that weblink will not increase.

Anyway to do this you need to modify both the helper.php and the \tmpl\default.p hp file.

Changes to helper.php:
Add the following to line 270 (or just after if this is not blank)

Changes to \tmpl\default.p hp:
Find the line which starts by
<a class="jqw_thumbnail" href="'.JURI::base().'index.php?task=weblink.go&id='.$this_id.'&option=com_weblinks"

and change to:
<a class="jqw_thumbnail" href="'.$jqw_params->weblinkentries->$i->linkurl.'"

There should be two instances of this (which one is in effect depends on whether you've enabled popups or not).

Hope that works for you!
0 Shalana Saturday, 26th January 2013, 11:41 am

I've got one question:

Is it possible to have all weblinks sorted by category at one single page?
0 Joel L Monday, 28th January 2013, 2:32 pm
Hi Shalana,

I haven't programmed anything in the module to do that but other downloaders have shown me pages where they've replicated the module (so they have lots of copies of this module on a specific page) and then set each module to match one of their categories.

Alternatively, selecting "Root" as category will just show all weblinks irrespective of category.

Hope that clears things up!

0 Joel L Wednesday, 16th January 2013, 11:27 am
Hi Richard,

As per my e-mail, choose a different authorized Thumbnail Service Group then "Offentlich". I have been told this means "Public" and since Joomla 1.6, there's something blocking public users from using the Joomla scripts to write to files on the server.

Test first with "Super User" (or whatever that's called in German) and make sure that works, then consider changing to a lower level user group.

I have my fingers crossed for you!

The images are appearing normal in my media manager sub-folder and the module parameters are pointing correctly to the designated sub-folder but so sad that the thumbnails are still not generated. I'll using another thumbnail service and let you know again. Not sure what went wrong:(

Hi Joe,
First of all , please let me thank you for creating such a great module/plugin and have it free for use :-).However, need you advice. Ive created the i mage sub-folder for the thumbnails in png format, set No to "stop thumbnail services", set service group to super administrator which is me but I still can't generate any thumbnails:(. The only consolation now is I have RoKbox installed and the preview is cool:). Please help:) Very much appreciate
0 Greg Tuesday, 6th November 2012, 8:05 pm
I went ahead a did mine by hand and it looks pretty good.
is there way to use different images for the thumb and the pop up?

if the image is the thumbnail from it tiles in the pop-up.
If it is the big image from screenshots the thumb only shows the upper left corner. I would want the thumb to just be a smaller version of the the full size image.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 7th November 2012, 10:56 am
Oh and in response to using two different images, you could modify the default.php file (lines 46-47 for v1.5.4.2) and add suffixes to your image file names (demo'd as "_small" and "_big"). Change:
echo '<div class="jqw_thumb_preview" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;" />&nbsp;</div>';
$this_img_str_popup= '<div class="jqw_thumb_popup" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');"/>&nbsp;</div>';

$this_img_path_small=str_replace('.', '_small.', $this_img_path);
$this_img_path_big=str_replace('.', '_big.', $this_img_path);
echo '<div class="jqw_thumb_preview" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path_small.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;" />&nbsp;</div>';
$this_img_str_popup= '<div class="jqw_thumb_popup" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path_big.'\');"/>&nbsp;</div>';

and remember to rename your image filenames as appropriate.

This example will mean that the inline image used is something like "1_small.png" and the popup image would be "1_big.png".
0 Joel L Wednesday, 7th November 2012, 10:49 am
Hi Greg,

It would involve a little coding. The reason the thumbnail repeats itself is because the image is set as a background to a layer of a specified width (popup or inline), if the image is smaller, you'll see it repeated.

To switch off the repeated background, modify the default.php file (line 46 in v1.5.4.2) of this module, change:
style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');"

style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;"

You can also repeat this for the popup image (line 47).

Without programming, you can stop the repeat by disabling rounded corners (set the value [image corner radius] to 0 in the module parameters).

No mater what group I set, if I am logged in to the site I get a 500 error. The page loads if I am not logged in, but if I am not logged in I can not generate thumbnail.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 6th November 2012, 2:59 pm
Hi Greg,

Forgot to say, depending on whether you are using for Joomla 1.5.x or Joomla 2.5.x, try selecting one or two groups.

If you are using Joomla 1.5.x, then select a minimum of two groups authorized to generate thumbnails.

If you are using Joomla 1.6.x or later then select only one group.

The only 500 error I know of with this Module is when I installed the version for 1.6 on a Joomla 1.5 site. I can create another 500 error with a specific template from a commercial provider but later found this was due to a conflict of names.

Please try assigning either 1 or 2 groups to the authorized thumbnail generators and see if that fixes your problem. If not, feel free to send me a screenshot of what it's doing.

Kind Regards,

0 Greg Monday, 5th November 2012, 3:03 pm
My apache logs are saying it is some type call to curl.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 6th November 2012, 9:58 am
Hi Greg,

Yes this module uses cURL to copy images from the thumbnail service server to your own server. It will need cURL to "generate" the images automatically.

Without cURL enabled on your server, you will need to do the images manually
1) Visit
2) Generate the image (small or large)
3) Upload to your quicklistweblin ks folder (or whatever folder you store your weblink screenshots in). You can use the joomla media manager or any File Manager/FTP application for your website.

The filenames of the images are "weblink_ID.ext " where ext is the filetype extension and "weblink_ID" is the ID reference of the link (eg. "1.png").

Hope that helps, I haven't yet devised a way without using cURL or without a WAMP setup to get the screenshots.
0 Greg Tuesday, 6th November 2012, 12:43 pm
I had the admin install cURL as soon as we saw the error and restart apache. Still now working.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 6th November 2012, 1:48 pm
Hi Greg,

Seeing your first message, it sounds like you still need to assign which Joomla groups will be able to generate images (do not choose "Registered" users as this will use up your entitlement to FREE thumbnails very quickly). Also check the ThumbnailServic e is available and play with different settings until you get some placeholder images (will say something like "awaiting image"), then keep refreshing the page until the thumbnails are downloaded.

Hope that works for you.
0 Greg Monday, 5th November 2012, 2:46 pm
Whatever page I add this module to stops working if I am logged into the front end. If I visit the page not logged in, I can see the links, no thumbnail yet, I have not neen able to generate them.

If I log in to the front end and visit the page to start the refresh process, I get an error 500 internal server error.

So im stuck. I have to be logged into generate thumbnails, but if I am logged in the page does nor load.

where do i put the links for the websites?
0 Joel L Monday, 22nd October 2012, 2:45 pm
Hi there mikelantzelo,

This extension is for use with the Joomla! Content Management System (CMS - The links are Joomla! weblinks and you add these using the Joomla! Admin Panel.

Hope that answers your question.
+1 JS Sunday, 21st October 2012, 5:04 pm
In the older version, there is a parameter 'display rank', but this is no longer available in the new version. I need this in order to show the links with a number beside them in a list 1- Link X, 2- Link Y, and so on. Is there a way to include this in the new module? It was very useful in the older version.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 23rd October 2012, 9:38 am
Hi JS,

Thank you for your support. It's true the older version had this but it was confusing downloaders as they thought this was the name of the files (they already need to distinguish between weblink IDs and filename IDs).

I plan on returning this in the newer version which will contain this in a HTMLtable format (mootools sortable tables).

Please bear with me until the newer version is complete as I hope to address any outstanding issues with this extension.

Kind Regards,

Hi Joe,

I installed and it was working very very fine. But today I noticed all thumbs were broken image files. I checked and the administrator left thumbnail service running. Now I try to create new thumbnails (I deleted the broken files), but all created thumbnails are coming broken.

Is there someway to fix it? (I change the service too, but no changes)
0 Joel L Friday, 21st September 2012, 12:33 pm
Hi Adriana,

I have not had this issue before. If you switch on the module's debug mode (module parameter), does it say it processed some images? If it isn't the service, then your host is possibly bugged that the service would have been writing new image files on every page load. Though I've left it on by accident a lot. Double-check that the images exist at the location that the module is looking at and that they're the correct file types. If you have a link I can take a look but I'll wait to see what you say.
0 Adriana Wednesday, 26th September 2012, 7:32 pm
You were right, the service was offline, both services I was using were offline. When I tried the other one left, it worked pretty fine.
0 Baschdi Thursday, 30th August 2012, 11:00 am
Hey there,
nice mod! Unfortunately it creates the thumbnails automatically, but they aren't displayed.
My sit is J1.7.3
0 Joel L Friday, 31st August 2012, 11:22 am
Hi Baschdi,

I have tested this in J1.7.2 but have not modified the code and it still works in J2.5.4. Please check the images are created in the folder you specify in the module parameters. Then check that the image format matches (eg. JPG = jpeg, PNG = *.png files, etc.) all thumbnails need to be of the same format. Also check the "Image Previews" is greater than zero.

Let me know how it goes.

0 Amir Tuesday, 7th August 2012, 11:04 am
Hi dear and thanks for this great module.
It have only one problem I think:
the link that this module will generate is something like this:
it will work good but as you see there is a non-standard structure in this part: tast=weblink.go
we cant use . in the links address (w3c links standard.)
so what is solution? this module must generate link address in seo friendly address.
+1 Joel L Tuesday, 7th August 2012, 12:46 pm
Hi Amir,

That's the first I've heard of it. It's going to be a problem for websites that have files called index.html. :c)

In any case, I'm not familiar with any such rule other than the following quote from W3C:
ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".").

The solution if required is really simple, simply encode the period (".") with its numerical entity: &#46;

0 Lily Friday, 20th July 2012, 2:29 pm
I love your module but like "Martyn Wraight", I would like to know if it is possible to show all links in a category instead of telling the number to diplay ?

Quoting Martyn Wraight:
Love the module but is there a way to display all weblinks and not have to tell the module how many to display please?
0 Joel L Monday, 23rd July 2012, 10:01 am
Hi Lily (ou Bonjour! sais pas),

I'm a little confused about this request. I have over 1000 weblinks so I'd imagine the module would take up a lot of space on my webpage.

We are in the process of upgrading this module to use Joomla core mootools with filter and navigation features.

I've noticed that a lot of people have been using the module as a component, so we should be releasing an equivalent component soon (expected Q3 2012).

In the meantime, can you not just put 100 in the "number of links" to display? If you only have 50, it only displays the 50 but will display more as you add them.

0 Joel L Monday, 23rd July 2012, 10:06 am
Hi Rodolfo,

I get muddled over Joomla 1.5.x and 2.5.x versions but one of the options in the sort is "random". This should do what it says.

Not sure what you mean about integrating with other components. Do you mean third-party (non-official-j oomla) ones? If so, I doubt it as Joomla CMS weblinks is already hard enough to keep up to date with :) But do shout, it doesn't hurt to take a look.

Hi arklanc,

Just checked the code and not sure why the module was checking against the "approved" value rather than the "published" one. I have changed this, and re-released as v1.5.4.4 for download. Possibly another field that's different to Joomla 1.5.x then it is in Joomla 2.5.x.

Hope this works for you!

hi Joe, i'm working with Joomla 1.5.23. I've installed JQW I've categories among my websites weblink (offline website).those categories are partners, important links, and subdomains.
i want to use two JQW modules on my site, which shows different weblink categories each.but unfortunately,J QW's parameter (Specify Category drop down) shows joomla's CONTENT CATEGORIES rather than WEBLINKS to change the joomla's content category into Joomla's weblink category?
+2 Joel L Monday, 12th March 2012, 11:59 am
Hi arklanc,

I have just checked and you are right! My fault for when I was downgrading the module ( it is initially designed for Joomla 1.6+ ) which I then downgrade for use in Joomla 1.5.x sites. Joomla 1.5.x refers to its weblink categories differently in the configuration and I had forgotten to change this.

I have made available for download version for Joomla 1.5.x websites. It is recommended for websites using the weblink category parameter.

Thank you for your time,

I hope you can help me.

0 Joel L Wednesday, 8th February 2012, 2:40 pm
Hi Robert-Jan,

Yes this is a CSS tweak. Depending on what version of Joomla and my module you are using:

In version (\tmpl\default. php):
Line 33:
$this_desc_inli ne = '<span style="font-size:'.$jqw_params->descfontsize.'%;display:block;">'...

Change to ->

Line 33:
$this_desc_inli ne = '<span style="font-size:'.$jqw_params->descfontsize.'%;display:block;color:black;">'...

I hope that helps!

0 Robert-Jan Tuesday, 7th February 2012, 3:00 pm

However there is always something to complain.
I have 3 wishes:

I hope you can help me.
Thanks for the good work.

0 Joel L Wednesday, 8th February 2012, 2:34 pm
Hi Robert-Jan,

For this could you not just put the module twice? Possibly below the article in a module position which spans the width of an article. If you visit they have done something of the sort. Shout if you need a hand but just to warn you that I've never tried however I am aware of other people managing to do this.

0 crossmr Monday, 30th January 2012, 1:00 pm
All my thumbnails generate a 4x4 grid of the the website..what's that all about??
0 Joel L Monday, 30th January 2012, 1:15 pm
Hi crossmr,

The thumbnails are always the same size unless you made them yourself. The module will repeat it as a background image so it sounds like the width and height specified are too large. Try specifying a width and height which matches the size of the thumbnail (w=120 h=92?).

Hope that helps.
0 crossmr Monday, 30th January 2012, 2:31 pm
I didn't generate them. They were generated automatically and the size of the pop and what not are all default as installed.
0 Joel L Friday, 3rd February 2012, 2:26 pm
Hi crossmr,

Do you have a link I could visit or if your site is not online, can you send a screenshot of what it's doing on the page? You can send this to my email.

0 crossmr Friday, 3rd February 2012, 2:36 pm
I managed to fix it. For some reason the default size of the popup was set to some huge size thats why it was repeating them.
I know I hadn't changed it myself and did nothing to alter the size of the thumbs.
after I changed it, it stopped repeating the images.

I have a news site with the following category hierarchy:

News Links

I would also like to create a module where I select ONLY TWO sub-categories. For example a Nation/World module for some pages.

I know selecting News Links would display all subcategories, but is there a way to show only two of the five?

0 Joel L Wednesday, 25th January 2012, 1:17 pm
Hi Phil,

I'm afraid there isn't a way to do this at the moment. I've applied this to my word cloud module but not to this weblinks module. I'll make a note to add it to the next version.

Hi Joe,

I'm working with Joomla 1.7.3 and downloaded your module v1.5.4.2. I'm working on localhost
Unfortunately I can't get it to work. I tried everything you suggested in above discussions.
Instead of putting a thumb, i get the text "Web Link". When I hover over the site (eg example1), there is a link to the site, but no preview as shown in your example.

Your help is much appreciated
0 Joel L Monday, 9th January 2012, 9:32 am
A tough one as you are working locally. Are you able to send me a screenshot of the debug mode or your module parameters?

It's either a case of your localhost not supporting cURL in PHP or just a setting that's awry.

0 Roland M Thursday, 5th January 2012, 11:51 pm
This thing is nice. But couldn't you modify the existing weblinks for just showing individual thumbshots there?
That would make my live much easier, cause I would not need to exchange all menue-items which I have already set to the existing weblink categories.
0 Joel L Friday, 6th January 2012, 1:18 pm
Hi rmone,

I'm being silly because I don't understand. You can switch off all the extra text to just leave the thumbnails either via the parameters or with some CSS coding. I don't think my module knows what to do with menu items but it can get screenshots of the pages those menu items lead to...

Is that what you mean?
0 Roland M Friday, 6th January 2012, 1:26 pm
Hi Joe, I thought it could possibly work similar like does and just modify the existing weblink component for adding individual thumbshots.

I will need to create three or four modules for each categorie of my weblinks and refere them in my menue.
0 Joel L Monday, 9th January 2012, 12:26 pm
Hi again Roland,

I have just tried out the Brettleben component for Joomla 1.5.x websites and I had no issues running it alongside my module. Looks great!

I think I listed some sites as examples that use this module which use the module several times on the same page. Should be ok. Let me know if there are any problems.

Kind Regards,

0 Joel L Monday, 9th January 2012, 11:02 am
Hi rmone,

The bretteleben one looks as if it's quite comprehensive as my module isn't a component and is supposed to do everything automatically based on the joomla weblinks you have and not on the Brettleben component weblinks. It's possible that if the Brettleben component is in use, that my module will not work.

I'll try to install the Brettleben one on a test site today and see if my module will still work with it.

Note that you can add a screenshot manually by simply naming an image "1.png" and uploading it to your joomla images folder (if you specified a subfolder in the module parameters than you need to upload it to that subfolder instead - PNG if you specified PNG and 1 if the weblink ID is 1).

Hope that helps. I'll update this post later.

Hi Leffe,

I found a major problem with my Joomla 1.5.x version of the module which still had the same links as the 1.6.x version. I have released version for Joomla 1.5.x sites with this link issue fixed. So thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I found that the other reason the weblinks would return a 404 page (Page cannot be found), were because they were not published (Publiceret?).

I have added another category which has no weblinks and then published all your links so that your links page still appears as before but with the links working.

I hope you find it useful!

0 Joel L Tuesday, 22nd November 2011, 1:27 pm
Hi Leffe,

So far, I have this article/page you see here.

From your Joomla 1.5.x Admin Panel:
  • Go into Media Manager and create a folder to store all your thumbnails (eg. "quicklistweblinks").
Install my module using your Joomla Extension Manager (modules).

Modify the module parameters:
  • Specify "Super Users" as Thumbnail Service Group
Specify the folder you made in step 1 for "Specify images folder"
Set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO

As a Super User,
  • login to your front-end website (the one without the /administrator at the end)
Keep refreshing the page in your web-browser until you are satisfied with the thumbnails
Go back in to your admin panel and set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to YES

Feel free to reply to this post if you run into any problems.

Kind Regards,

0 leffe Tuesday, 22nd November 2011, 9:46 am

If you are using the version for Joomla 1.5.x websites then you need to select a minimum of two user groups authorized to generate thumbnails (hold down CTRL key and click on the ones you want). For example I select "Administrators " and "Super Users".

If you are using the version for Joomla 1.6 or greater, then you only have to select one joomla user group in the module parameters (Joomla 1.6 didn't support multiple selections for this group and nor does J1.7 from what I can see).

This should fix your issue, if it doesn't, feel free to reply to this post.

Kind Regards,

0 Valerie Tuesday, 8th November 2011, 7:42 pm
I really like this module, but I'm having a couple of issues.

1. If I set my inline thumbnail larger than 120 X 90, it repeats. If I set it smaller, there's a lot of white space on the right. How do I fix the repeating background, or just center the image and title?
2. When I don't use an image in the popup, the popup width is too narrow. How do I set the width of the popup without using a thumbnail image?
0 Joel L Wednesday, 9th November 2011, 12:57 pm
Hi Valerie,

Thank you for your input, I can try to get all these issues automatically addressed in future versions.

1. I thought I had prevented this but if not it will repeat the background image. Adding no-repeat to the CSS class will fix this or creating a bigger image (manually unfortunately). If you want to center the background I think it's "background-pos ition:center center".

2. The width of the popup is not specified at the moment. This was to allow a client to change it to whatever they want. What you can do is add the following code to a template.css file (for joomla sites usually "/templates/<your_active_template_name>/template.css"
.jqw_popup {width:200px;}

Where "200px" means 200 pixels wide. Change this to whatever.

I hope this answers your question, if not, feel free to post back.

Hi Joe,

You use rokbox in your demo, I use rokbox too, but when I put (for instance)

{rokbox title=|Did you mean... :: ...Google?| size=|700 450| thumb=|images/s tories/demo/rok box/google.jpg| }{/rokbox }

in my weblink area, than it doesn't work and shoes the whole tekst instead of a link?
How do you that?

Regards, Chantal
0 Joel L Saturday, 5th November 2011, 9:59 am
Hi Chantal,

If you have rokbox installed then you don't have to do anything other than select in the module parameters "Open in Rokbox" for Target Window. I don't think you can add code in the weblink descriptions.

Kind Regards,

Hi Joe,

I installed version on my Joomla 1.6.4. Somehow the thumbnails won't show. I only see the link. The images are generated though when I check my thumbnails folder. Any idea what I can do wrong ?
Regards, Chantal.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:47 pm
Hi Chantal,

This is quite a common issue. It's usually just a matter of the setup in the "Thumbnail Service" section. But once your parameters are correct for your site, updating thumbnails consists of changing one parameter and then changing it back.

For testing/concept purposes:
  • Make a folder to store all your thumbnails (joomla media manager)
  • Specify "Super Users" as Thumbnail Service Group
  • Specify the folder you made in step 1 for "Specify images folder"
  • Set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO
  • As a Super User, login to your front-end website (the one without the /administrator at the end)
  • Keep refreshing the page in your web-browser until you are satisfied with the thumbnails
  • Go back in to your admin panel and set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to YES

I hope this helps you get your images. Once you have these, the rest is all presentation and coloring.

I think the setup is the problem based on your post. If you provide me with further details, I may be able to see another reason why it wouldn't be working.

Kind Regards,

Sorry, forgot to mention it's a J1.5 site. I wish I had time to convert to 1.7 but it's a large site and a volunteer job.

0 Joel L Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:36 pm
Hi Dave,

That's Ok. Sorry for just reading this after reading your first message :c)

Give me a day or two to downgrade my J16 module for Joomla 1.5.x websites!

Kind Regards,

0 Dave B Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:42 pm
Thank you very much for doing this. Look out for a donation.

0 Joel L Friday, 4th November 2011, 2:43 pm
Hi Dave,

Thank you so much for the donation. I have released version for Joomla 1.5.x websites. Note that this version also removes the "50%" width specification that people have been complaining about but now I get complaints that the table is no longer in a nice grid layout... In which case restore the "width:50%" on the div at line 65 of /tmpl/default.php.

Hope that all helps!

Kind Regards,

0 Dave B Sunday, 30th October 2011, 3:29 pm
Hi Joe,

I just found this and it is really cool. For organizations that have partners or links pages this is some real nice eye candy. I have a site that has a hierarchy for the links. Like our most important links first, etc. Can there be a setting for manual ordering from the weblinks order or some other way to control it? This would be the bomb. :D

0 Joel L Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:35 pm
Hi Dave,

I have actually added your suggestion to the latest public version of this module (v1.5.4). You specify the weblink IDs separated by commas and it seems to be working properly.

Note that if there is a weblink ID in the module which you did not include in the "custom order" parameter, then this will appear first (at the top).

Kind Regards,

0 Enzo Tuesday, 25th October 2011, 6:26 pm
I'm definitely needing an alternative to Joomla's own weblinks module that will to display a category and its SUB-Categories in the date order. Does your module display weblinks in a sub-categories of the selected category? it doesn't look like there is an option from the screenshots.

0 Joel L Wednesday, 26th October 2011, 9:08 am
Hi Enzo,

There is a parameter "Specify Category" which uses the built-in Joomla command to list categories. As there are no subcategories for weblinks in Joomla 1.5 or earlier, I am presuming you mean Joomla 1.6-1.7 websites? In which case, I can confirm that Joomla 1.7.2 displays this parameter with the subcategories listed as well (prefixed with a hyphen/dash).

Kind Regards,

0 Enzo Thursday, 27th October 2011, 5:48 am
Im using Joomla 1.7

I'm trying to display on the homepage the most recent weblinks relating to a particular general subject (e.g. Transport). A weblinks page elsewhere would display the 'Transport' weblinks broken into more specific lists (Sub-Categories ) such as 'Cars', 'Trucks', 'Motorcycles'. Any new weblinks added to 'cars', 'trucks' or 'motorcycles' subcategories would appear in the latest 'Transport' weblinks on the homepage.

Thanks for responding so fast!
0 Joel L Friday, 28th October 2011, 12:00 pm
Hi Enzo,

Yes I've been having the same conversation with someone else asking about this and on reading your post I realise I haven't replied to you properly.

As far as I can tell, specifying a parent category will include all weblinks found in the subcategories of that category. For example, specifying "Root" includes all weblinks in your joomla site.

Kind Regards,

0 Enzo Saturday, 29th October 2011, 11:20 pm
Hi Joe,
Selecting ROOT does indeed give all links, however that includes everything in categories that are not wanted. Specifying a category, and not the Root, does not include subcategories.

I'm also having a problem with the links only taking up the left 50% of the module. I've included the website URL in the form so you wcan see your module at the bottom of the page, underneath Joomla's default weblinks module.

Thanks again,
0 Joel L Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:32 pm
Hi Enzo,

You were right. I hadn't noticed because most sites I work on dump all their weblinks into one category.

So I've tweaked the query a little and I can now get the module to find weblinks up to 2 extra levels deep (including the category you specify).

I have made available for download version 1.5.4 of my module for Joomla 1.6-1.7 websites. Please try it out and let me know how this goes.

Kind Regards,

0 Enzo Sunday, 6th November 2011, 7:06 pm
Ignore my post from 10 minutes ago!
You fixed the Category issue in V1.5.4.2. Its now displaying the selected category and its subcategories!

0 Enzo Sunday, 6th November 2011, 6:57 pm
Hi Joe,
Unfortunately I think there is something wrong. If I Specify Root, I get all the links. I I specify a category or even a subcategory I get nothing at all, even though there are links in that category!

Even so, Thanks for the rapid update, Joe! hopefully you can spot the problem easily in your code.

0 tom Sunday, 16th October 2011, 1:08 pm
Can someone help me figure out why my weblink popup gets cut off. I thought the popup would appear complete but it gets cut off by the size of the module. Not sure what I have to change to get it to work.
weblinks is on bottom left side of page.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 18th October 2011, 8:44 am
Hi tryskoski,

I'm of the opinion that this is because I was told to use DIV layers instead of html TABLES. It only seems to do it on certain templates so I have to find a way round the various templates. It's usually a DIV within a DIV that causes this problem. I disable this popup in my Joomla 1.5 sites and use an experimental version on my Joomla 1.6+ sites (v2b) where this issue is fixed but I'm still working on cross-browser compatibility.

If you can think of another way (by the way it's not the z-index), I'll be happy to try it out. I'm just looking for a way to override the template's css code which causes this (for example the Joomla 1.7 default template uses div layers and doesn't have this issue).

In the interim I would suggest disabling the popups. I'll update this post by the end of the week with the progress status.

Kind Regards,

0 Roland Tuesday, 4th October 2011, 2:22 pm
This is a nice module. I'm looking for such a thing. Now that I found it. I don't to write it on my own.
One feature I would appreciate to find in one of the next version would be, the posibility to include also the sub-categories not only one weblins category.
0 Joel L Wednesday, 26th October 2011, 9:11 am
Hi Roland,

This is really odd as I've just tested this in Joomla 1.7.2 and the "Specify Category" also includes the subcategories. Admittedly this only seems to let you select one but I have the feeling it automatically selects links that are featured in subcategories.

For example, selecting "Root" displays all weblinks...

Kind Regards,

0 Roland Sunday, 30th October 2011, 6:20 am
Hi Joe,
I've tried it with "Root" and you are right there it works fine.
In my case I have a category "general" with subcategotiers. For example: general -> shopping, finance.
When I'm selecting "general" than I only see the weblinks of "general" in the Quicklist but with "More Links" I can see all.
It seems the subcategories are only inlcude es in the QuickList when "Root" is selected.
Kind Regards, Roland
0 Joel L Wednesday, 2nd November 2011, 2:29 pm
Hi Roland,

After a bit of investigating, I found that Joomla is only built to use subcategories if you select "Root"... really silly... and there are no other categories using nested sets which include their subcategories...

So I've tweaked the query a little and I can now get the module to find weblinks up to 2 extra levels deep (including the category you specified).

I have made available for download version 1.5.4 of my module for Joomla 1.6-1.7 websites. Please try it out and let me know how this goes.

Hi Joe,

That's really a silly thing in Joomla that it only works with "Root". But any way.
I've tried the new version 1.5.4. When a don't select "Root" no Links are shown in the module itself. Could have done something wrong with the installation? (I've deinstalled the old one an than installed the new version)

0 Joel L Thursday, 3rd November 2011, 12:25 pm
Hi Roland,

The module is available as an upgrade so it isn't necessary to uninstall the previous version.

One problem that will happen with uninstalling and reinstalling, is that all your parameters might be reset.

If your images are still in your joomla media folder ( mages/quicklist weblinks - where quicklistweblin ks is the name of your thumbnail folder you specify in the module parameters). Also check that the right image type/format is specified (eg. if you specified JPG before and uninstalled, then the default I think is BMP in which case switch it back to JPG).

Uninstalling it kinda resets all the parameters to their defaults but I don't think it deletes your thumbnail folder so it should be a matter of just checking the module parameters.

Kind Regards,

0 Joel L Monday, 3rd October 2011, 9:37 am
Hi byt,

The error you mention is with regards to a 3rd party extension called "db8 latest weblinks" and not mine I'm afraid.

If you got this error after installing mine "quicklist weblinks", it is possible there may be a conflict but I have just tried on a Joomla 1.5 site and both worked fine in tandem.

Also I don't see the "db8" module being compatible with Joomla 1.7.x websites. Even visiting their site "http://www.db8 .nl/" doesn't say anything that they have upgraded the module to work in Joomla 1.6 or greater which is what they need to work in your Joomla 1.7 site.

Hope that makes sense.

Kind Regards,

hi Joe I have an issue for you I have installed your 1.4.4 version of quicklistweblin ks for a joomla site 1.5.23
but when I call the module I get the following error;

Quicklist Weblinks
Warning: in_array() [ ray]: Wrong datatype for second argument in /home/homeporn/public_html/modules/mod_quicklistweblin ks/helper.php on line 214

I have made a fresh installation but still get this error, would this version be the latest for a joomla 1.5?
0 Joel L Friday, 30th September 2011, 1:25 pm
Hi David,

Yes if you are using Joomla 1.5 you need to select a minimum of two "Thumbnail Service Groups" in the parameters of this module. Personally I select "Administrators " and "Super Administrators" . I would not recommend choosing "Registered Users" as this will use up your entitlement to 100,000 free prints quite quickly.

If/When you switch to Joomla 1.6+, this module only accepts the one group (until Joomla return this to like it was on Joomla 1.5).

Hi Fabio,

I have uploaded version that will address these. Sorry that you're finding these errors, they are the ones that my system doesn't pick up so it's really useful for me.

Unfortunately there was a code overhaul between v1.5.3 and v2beta which means I'm fixing errors that were in an older version of the module... But it's all good because then version 2 will be that much better :c)

Hi Fabio,

So I should have probably looked at the error you meant rather than installing a new Joomla 1.7.1 site (can't keep myself).

The module installs fine on certain sites but it seems yours is more strict. I have released version with this corrected. Please download version 1.5.3 again of this module and try again.

Thank you! Kind Regards,

thanks for this great module!
I just have one question, my site is for tube videos so I need to make the thumbnail manually cuz the automatic system leaves a black square where the tube should be, having that said what I do is upload a jpg file into the folder (which I have set up with the permissions and all(works fine with the automatic ones)) then I insert it in the description filed of the post/link, but it wont show up on the thumbnail only text works. Im I doing it right?
+1 Joel L Wednesday, 28th September 2011, 11:40 am
Hi David,

I don't know about the description part, that comes from whatever you put in your weblink entry via the Joomla admin panel.

This module's parameters need to be noted:

Upload your images to the image folder directory (eg. 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg) the numbers as filenames are the matching ID numbers to the weblinks. If you switch this module's "Debug Mode" on, visiting the front-end of your website should display your top 5 weblinks and the ID numbers they're associated with.

A little confusing but feel free to get back to me if it's still not working.

Kind Regards,

0 David Wednesday, 28th September 2011, 1:04 pm
yes it worked the only thing I needed to do was rename the files with the same number as the links id, at the end its not even necessary to add the picture to the link. :) maybe an idea for future release would be to put an option to upload a picture or a path from the system itself for those who want to do it manually.. thanks anyway for the help and support. Great job!

+1 Joel L Friday, 23rd September 2011, 6:52 am
Hi Dafik,

I'm of the opinion that this is to do with the "thumbnail service group" parameter of the module. If you are using Joomla 1.5 then try selecting at least two groups authorized to generate thumbnails (eg. Administrators and Super Administrators) .

If you are using my module for Joomla 1.6
then just check that one service group is selected and save the module.

Hope that fixes it!

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to change the length of the text of my links?

A number of the links are cut short, but would look nicer if the name was fully visible :)

Thanks :)
0 Joel L Wednesday, 21st September 2011, 8:53 am
Hi Graeme,

Thanks for your message. If the length is being cut shorter than you specified in the module parameter, depending on the version you are using, there should be a character limit for both title and description. The early versions of this module limit by character length rather than width, increase the value in the module parameters "Inline Description Length" and "Inline Title Length".

Hope that helps!

Quoting Webmaster:

I have similar problem. Increasing number of characters didn't help. I increased to 250 , but still displaying about 20, then the title is cut to second line. Even the popup display is about 15 characters. Very narrow, difficult to display the text and read. :-?
0 Joel L Tuesday, 25th October 2011, 3:41 pm
Hi blinx,

I've had someone else write in about this but it was due to their CSS. So the full title was displaying but with word wrapping, there was always going to be spaces at the end of the line.

The popup display is admittedly a nightmare on certain templates including some of my own. In future versions of this module, the CSS popup is gone and it uses the Joomla core mootools instead (Joomla 1.6+).

To fix this immediately, look into CSS text-overflow:e llipsis and word-wrap attributes. Also play with the parameters until there is an acceptable module displayed. I may include preset styles in the next version as it has been difficult to accommodate for the various combinations you can have.

Kind Regards,

0 Dave B Friday, 4th November 2011, 9:14 pm
Just installed on J1.7.2 with and am getting some text wrapping in the popup window but not enough and it's pushing the window over to fit the text. I can't figure out the css location and see some from the template. I was also hoping to space out the main images a little bit.
0 Yahhr Sunday, 18th September 2011, 8:51 pm
Is there a way to change the link color? I have a site with a blue background and cannot find a way to change the link colors to a lighter shade so the user can see the names of the linked pages.
0 Joel L Monday, 19th September 2011, 11:29 am
Hi Yahhr,

The color of the links comes from the color of links for that template. Perhaps there is a module class suffix on your other modules which display links in a different color?

Either way, open the template.css file of the active Joomla template of your website. Type the following:
.jqw_thumbnail a:link {color:blue}
.jqw_thumbnail a:visited {color:purple}

You can replace the words blue/purple with any valid CSS reference (eg. blue, #0000FF, rgb(0,0,255)).

Hope that helps!

Pls give me the solution, I'm really glad when I found your extensions. Thanks in advance. :-)
0 Joel L Friday, 16th September 2011, 12:15 pm
Hi Lily,

That's a new one on me. The line refers to where the module wants to stop creating an image (copied from a URL to your server).

So I'm of the opinion that your server is not setup for cURL. Generate a phpinfo() page for your WAMP setup and see if it is CURL-enabled. Tony Spencer has a pretty good article on getting this setup on a Windows machine:

If you can't get cURL working on your setup, you will need to switch the STOP thumbnail service to YES and generate the images yourself. (either go to the weblink, hit the PrintScreen key "prtscrn" and paste into an image editor. Or search my site for JWT which is a crude program that can take pictures of websites as well.

I hope all this helps. Irrespectively do get back to me and let me know how it goes.

Thanks a lot, Joe.
I chose to generate images manually. I created 1.png,2.png,3.p ng and 4.png on the "thumbnails folder" under "images" and set "Specify images folder" parameter to "thumbnails folder" but when I browse front end site, pop up not show up  Pls kindly advice,
0 Joel L Monday, 19th September 2011, 11:35 am
Hi Lily,

So can you browse to the images on your server eg. http://<your _joomla_website >/images/thu mbnails%20folde r/1.png? Note that spaces aren't what I recommend but as a URL entity a space is "%20" (without the quotes).

If you like, send me either a picture/screens hot of what's happening or if it's online, then a link will help me see if there's anything.

The module has it's own debug mode which if you enable this, will display some messages on the frontend of the site (just under this module). Please copy&paste the messages to me.

Hi Rmacleod,

Sorry I've taken so long in replying. I originally intended to write you a new version that would let you do this using the module parameters but ended with my beta version (

In the meantime, you can use CSS as there are CSS names associated with the text so that downloaders could put their own code... The long solution is learn CSS...

The not so long solution but not immediate is to wait for a newer version of my module I'm afraid...

0 Paul Wednesday, 10th August 2011, 2:10 pm
Hi, great component thanks.

All working OK, except do you have any idea why only the 1st thumbnail is showing in the module, and not the other 4?

The pops work 100%.

I have disabled the inline description so it only shows the title, plus I would like the thumbnail.

0 Joel L Thursday, 11th August 2011, 12:24 pm
Hi Paul,

If you only have the first image displaying, can you check that the module parameter "Number of Previews" is 5 (if you are displaying 5 links). It will count from the top. Think the default is 1.

This was so that people could have the first link different to the others in the list.
0 Rmacleod Tuesday, 9th August 2011, 11:52 pm
Don't you mean "Stop Web Service" to NO?

I don't have an "Enable Thumbnail Service".
0 Joel L Wednesday, 10th August 2011, 10:27 am
Hi Rmacleod,

Yes sorry I meant STOP Thumbnail Service to No :-)

Also check that the Service Group parameter (can have multiple selections) highlights a group you belong to. Then login to the front-end and see if it generates anything.

If it still doesn't work, are you able to switch on DEBUG MODE and send me the code that outputs? You can email this for privacy.

Kind regards,

0 Rmacleod Wednesday, 10th August 2011, 3:07 pm
Interesting, I selected every group and then it works but when I selected single groups it didnt. eg. I picked "Publisher" all my user accounts are publishers but it didn't work with them.
0 Joel L Thursday, 11th August 2011, 12:28 pm
Hmmm... I have "Administrators " and "Super Administrators" selected. There is no inheritance in this group selection. You can select multiple groups but setting this to "Registered Users", for example, does NOT mean "Administrators " are inclusive. You need to highlight "Administrators " as well to have these generate thumbnails.

Hope that helps!

Can you tell me what version of my module you have installed on which version of Joomla? This site is using 1.4.3 on a Joomla 1.5.23 website and this is in order of most recent first.

Kind Regards,

Hi Chaster,

Hmm... I have not managed to recreate the error. I have module version 1.5.3 working on a Joomla 1.6.3 website but I don't think it's the Joomla! CMS that's the issue.

Could you switch your debug mode on and email me the code that displays on the front-end? The part about SELECT ... ORDER BY ...

0 Chaster Wednesday, 10th August 2011, 6:58 pm

SQL Query:
SELECT id, title, url, description, created, hits FROM `#__weblinks` WHERE state=1 AND approved=1 AND catid=77 ORDER BY date DESC

Best wishes

Hi Chaster,

I see the problem sort of. The weblinks are being ordered by the system date. This is the date that the core Joomla weblink component sets when you add a weblink. I modified it for someone to order by "created" which is a date that users can modify in each weblink options.

Cut a long story short, I'll release a version which has this as a parameter (for the user) to decide on whether date should be the created, system or modified date.

I don't think that this is the problem.

It would be also okay, if the weblinks are ordered by the system date - but it doesn't work. so older weblinks are always on the top ...

best wishes

I have two modules on my website with web links and two link categories. In module settings I setup for each module to show only specific category, but both modules are displaying all added links, no matter what category they belong. How should I fix this?

Hi Ljubisha,

Thank you for your message. Can you tell me what version of my module you have installed on what version of Joomla! CMS?

I have this working on both my demo sites and I know of two sites that have multiple copies of the module on one page, each with different categories specified.

Version 1.4 and joomla 1.7. I see now that the latest is 1.5.4. I downloaded 1.4 from joomla extension directory probably. But i fixed the problem anyway. There was a catid skip in sql query when I turned on debug mode, so I fixed it in helper.php. I will now download 1.5.x :-) Thanks for response.

Thanks Ljubisha, Interesting as no one's reported this one yet. I'll double-check the latest version as this has never been addressed really when DEBUG MODE is switched on. Thanks again for the input.

No problem ;-)

I'm having the same issue - No automatic display generation. I've tried all three sites. My images folder is set up, Stop Thumbnail Service is set to no and I've logged in as the specific user group with two different web browsers. Refreshed and refreshed but nothing.

I have three different mods up now, each using a different service and no luck. Otherwise love the mod, so please help...

Hi Guys,

Absolutely right. I said to myself it would be a good thing to test all these upgrades and I thought I had. Only my test site for Joomla 1.6 wasn't generating new images because it already had them so it was a poor test.

I have since tested this again on a fresh J16 site and I owe a thousand apologies to Funker as she/he was spot on.

I've released a new version (1.5.2) of my module for Joomla 1.6.x+ websites. Tested successfully so please shout if it's still not generating these automatically.

Thanks for the quick support! Thumbsnails are working perfectly. They look great! Another questions/probl em though... The links in the popups are redirecting themselves back to my website, so they are not working. They work from the weblinks page (aftr=er clicking more links), however. Any ideas? Thanks again.

Hi Glo,

I have released version 1.5.3 of my module which addresses this issue.

Hope it helps!

Hi Glo,

Yes I picked up this bug. It's due to the double-slash in the URL for each link, so really just one slash '/' too many. The next version had to have the slash removed from \tmpl\default.p hp: Line 59: ..."JURI::base().'/index.php'"...

There are some other strange combinations of parameters that have issues which are also covered. One that will be relevant to your site is the ID to CLASS for W3C validation as I didn't expect people to put my module more than once on a page.

Will update this email when the next version is released. ;-)

If I do it manually (1.png, 2.png ..)then it works, but automatically would be better :)

Hi Funker,

I owe you an apology as yesterday's version wasn't generating thumbnails in Joomla 1.6.x+ sites. I've released a newer version of my module available for download which has this bug fixed.

Thank you for your time.

0 Joel L Tuesday, 2nd August 2011, 7:01 pm
Automatically is the point of the upgrade as my module used to be non-automatic and I think you've just done it the way I used to have to.

I'd be interested to know if your images are being generated. Your server must also support cURL in order to download images from another website.
0 Funker Tuesday, 2nd August 2011, 12:52 pm
Thats what i'm looking for, but no thumbnails are displayed. I follow your documentation, but nothing happened.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 2nd August 2011, 1:00 pm
Hi Funker,

No thumbnails? Install the ZIP as per my instructions above. For thumbnails however, you need to create an subfolder in your website's images folder (eg. called "quicklistwebli nks"), then specify this in the module parameter.

Check you stick to one type of image, whatever you prefer working with (eg. PNG). All images, thumbnails and no_thumbnail_ye t image should be then in the format you set in the module parameter.

Then you need to make sure you have those images in that folder. This module will fetch new images remotely but will store these locally to display on your site. If the local images do not exist then you have to switch the "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO and login with as an authorized user. Or you can upload your own images for use by the module but this is longer. My module should generate these automatically.

If you have a link, feel free to include it and I'll take a look. If it isn't LIVE yet then just give me some info as to how far you got in the documentation.

I have done all this.

I need images in the folder or did they generate automatically in the folder? Did the folder need permissions?

If i have "no_thumbnail_y et.*", then it shows this thumbnail.

Thanks a lot.
0 Joel L Tuesday, 2nd August 2011, 6:53 pm
Hi Funker,

The "no_thumbnail_y et.*" where * is the image type you specify in the module parameter (eg. "png"). If you switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO this will generate the image screenshots from the service and copy the images from their server to your own Joomla! server (images subfolder specified in the module parameter). It then stores these images for use later so that you don't have to continue using the service and so your server uses local images.

The images should be generated automatically (check your Joomla! Media Manager), permissions will be the same as Joomla!.

Great. Is there any future possibility of 'random links' ?
+1 Joel L Tuesday, 2nd August 2011, 9:04 am
Hi blinx,

I've added the random ordering to this module however if you are using thumbnail previews, you will need to generate these beforehand or you may just get the placeholder indicating image does not exist. You can create a "no_thumbnail_y et.png" (if you have specified PNG type images) in the images folder with the other thumbnails that will display instead.

This is so far for Joomla 1.5.x websites. A compatible version for Joomla 1.6.x or greater is expected later on today.

Hope you like it.

0 blinx Tuesday, 9th August 2011, 9:15 am
thanks for the randoms. I like :-)
+2 Joel L Tuesday, 26th July 2011, 9:38 am
Good idea blinx!
I'll add it to the proposed future release.
