Transferring Apps (purchases) from iPhone 4s to 5s on a Windows PC

What?
Just so many articles out there that did not help me. This article is how I finally did mine.

Why?
I had paid for some apps on my old phone and realized that if I didn't do a "restore", then I would have to install and pay for them all again. My purchased music was in the cloud so those could be re-downloaded on to the new phone (not fun).

The Apple documentation iOS: Transferring information from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device was as useful as a Microsoft KnowledgeBase article. In that, it restored all my photos and the default Apple apps, but missed out all my other apps (and audio).

How?
Note that the restore can be done when the new phone prompts you to set it up but you could do the below again at anytime (as I discovered). The steps below apply after having gone through the process of setting up the phone and finishing on the "Get Started" (including Touch ID).
  1. Ensure your old phone's iOS is fully updated. (I did this while the phone was NOT connected to the computer, ie via the Settings > General > Software > Update option)
  2. Right-click on your iTunes shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".
  3. Plug both phones into the computer.
  4. In iTunes, right-click on the old phone and select "Transfer Purchases". (you will need to know your Apple ID password)
  5. Under the "Summary" tab, in the "Backups" section, click on "This computer" and tick the "Encrypt iPhone backup" (note the password as you'll need it for future restores as well as to untick the box).
  6. Click on the "Back Up Now" button.
  7. When that's done, Right-click on the new phone and select "Restore from Backup..."
  8. Select the backup you just made (might default to a different backup so click on the dropdown to make sure it's the one you just made).
  9. Enter the password you entered when creating the Encrypted Backup.
  10. Wait for the restore to complete.
  11. The new phone will restart but you have to wait for the sync to start and complete (can take as long as the restore/backup)
Done Unplug your new phone and test. Ta daa!
